RECREATION GROUNDS FOB MELROSE. ACTION BY THUD COUNCIL. The City Council last evening decided on tie recommendation of the Reserves Committee to apply to Parliament for permission to reclaim a portion of tie harbour at Evans Bay for the purpose of forming a recreation ground at Kilbkmo, and that such a sum' as may be necessary for the purpose of ejecting aj rubble wall be sot apart by the Connell, provided, however, the trustees of the park convoy to the Council the , area of ground now in their trust for general recreation purposes. It was decided that the Finance Committee bo instructed to consider the question of providing the sum of £BOOO for the formation of a recreation ground at JJuppa street, Borhampore, in accordance with plans prepared by the City Engineer. For this sum two playing grounds can to obtained with a total area of five .icres. * Councillor Wiltshire pointed out that it was understood that within a measuiible time the Basin Reserve would have to he cut up. At a later stage the Mayor explained Hmt when the electric tramways were (list proposed the Council promoted a hill in Parliament for the cutting up of the Basin Reserve. The Council offered to give an equal, if not superior, ground, hut they failed to get the bill through, so there was no option but to go round the reserve. What the Electrical Engineer said was that if they happened at any time to get a cricket ground at Kilbimie or elsewhere they could go to Parliament again, and ask for permission' to go through the reserve.
