FIRES.
PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, September S. ’ A confectionery sttop in Symonds* street, owned by Mrs Williams, was Rutted bv fire to-day. The shop belonged to a block of old buildings adjoining the Caledonian Hotel. The flames, working along the roof, threatened the hotelbut the brigade prevented the fire spreading. Four shops were damaged by water, and Mi-s Williams’s shop was burned out. The damage is estimated at between £2OO and £3OO. Regarding the Symonds street fire. Mt« ’Williams had her furniture and stock insured in the Manchester office for £IOO. Mrs Tretheway’s property was not insured. Her furniture and the other contents of the building were seriously injured, and she will be a considerable loser. Mr Young, occupying the third shop, next door to the hotel, alo suffered loss by damage through water. The shops were insured in the Commercial Union for XIOO each, ELTHAM, September S. A five-roomed house, owned by Mrs Davies, was completely destroyed by fire this morning. The building was insured for JCIOO in the Victoria office and the furniture for £SO in the Alliance office.
