A Sydney cable message announces the death, from septic pneumonia, of Lady Dyne, wife of Sir William J. Lyne, Secretary for Homo Affairs in the Parliament of tho Australian Commonwealth, Deceased, who was married in 1370, was a daughter of Mr Edward Carr Shaw, of Glamorgan, Tasmania.

Letters hare been received from Alisa Maggie Welle, of Christchurch, who went Home recently to prosecute her musical studies, which give an encouraging account of her chances of taking a good position as a contralto. Mira Wo'ls intends taking lessons from Air Santloy, and probably from one of the best Continental masters.

Johnston, of the Boyal Now Zealand Artillery, stationed ’at North Shore, Auckland, is at present in Wellington, engaged in winding up the affairs of his brother, tho late Constable J. Johnston. Sergeant Johnston some three years ago invented a now breech bolt for disappearing guns, and submitted tho plans to the Admiralty. After a great deni of correspondence and considerable deliberation on the part of the authorities in England, it was decided not to adopt the idea, although it was considered to have advantage in certain oases. Sergeant Johnston was, however, promoted a step for the ingenuity he had displayed. and was jjighly commended for tho invention.
