GATHERING OF BOWLERS

COMPLIMENTARY “SOCIAL” TO WINNING TEAMS. Fully ouo hundred bowlers from "Wellington and suburban clubs assembled at the residence of Mr Grady, "Woolcombe street, last night to take part in the complimentary •'social” tendered to members of the successful, teams in the recent North and South Island championship tournaments. Mr Grady kindly placed his home at tho disposal of his brother howlers, and he and bis family left nothing undone to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of those present. Mr 1). J. Nathan, president of the Northern Bowling Association, was moved to the chair. The chairman read a letter from the secretary to the Palmerston North Bowling Club, in reply to one sent on the 31st January, consenting to meet the winners cf tho recent tournament at Christchurch, tho,,Victoria Chib, on tho Wellington Green on tbo 25tli inst. Pleasure was expressed at the promise that trophies would be provided, and it was suggested that four medals should bo given to the victors. Messrs Brackcnridgc. 801 l and Goodor expressed their willingness to meet the Palmerston team at tho time and place stated, and the chairman, amidst applause, made the announcement that he would be happy, if permitted, to present the medals. The offer was accepted and it was decided that tbo Palmerston Club should be informed accordingly. Tbo chairman, on behalf of tho local clubs, next proposed the toast of the victors in recent contests._ In doing so, be said it was thought right that they should in some small way show tboii* appreciation for the honours carried off by two of their local clubs. Tiio victory achieved in Christ church had overshadowed anything that ever happened previously in the howling world —not only in tho howling world of Wellington, hut of the North Island. (Applause.) Hitherto it had been tho masin*—“lf you want, to sec howling yon must go to tho south.” hut ho thought tho order was now reversed. (Hoar, hear.) _ They should all feel proud of tho distinction gained by those members of tho Wellington Club who had gone to tho south. They would now have an opportunity of witnessing a competition between tho two best teams in the North Island. Ho paid a tribute to tho hospitality and kindness shown to those who had visited Palmerston at the recent tournament, and expressed the gratification experienced at the fact that a local club had carried away the Huddart-1 arkcr Cup. Ho coupled with the toast tho names of Messrs Brackcnridgc, senr. and jnnr., Goodor and Bell, as well as Messrs Carroll. Bary, H’Emdcn and Price, of tho Newtown Club.. Mr Gray seconded the toast and added his congratulations to tho mcmhcis of the successful teams. The toast was drunk with enthusiasm, and responded to by Messrs Brackon-ridn-o, senr.. Churchward, Bell and Bary. Mi' MoTvorrow proposed tho health of Mr Hislon, a member of the New Zealand Bowling Association (South Island), which was also duly honoured and acknowledged. Tho proceedings were agreeatsly diversified with songs and recitations, contributed by Messrs Goodor. F avel Fox. Havhittle.'Hill. Gibbs. Smith. Parata, Allan. Hendry and others. 'Supner was served, and before separating the healths of the chairman, and Mr (irndy and family were drunk wih.i enthusiasm.
