TERRIBLE VOYAGE OF A TRANSPORT. ADELAIDE, October 19. Tho steamer City of Lincoln has put in here in distress. She Had a terrible experience when cn route from Melbourno to Durban with 700 remounts aboard. A terrible gale was encountered off Capo Burda, compelling her to lay to for the sake of the stock. The horses were dreadfully knocked about and frantic with terror. Then the main crank shaft broke, ami tho vessel lay helpless in the trough of tho sea, which broke right over tho vessel, staving in the bulwarks. The horseboxes wore swept overboard and down the hold, whore horses lay piled in heaps, dead and dying. A passing steamer stood by, and when the gale moderated somewhat twice got hawsers aboard, but they broke, .and the attempt had to be given up. Eventually, after three days in the gale, the City of Lincoln’s engineers managed to disconnect the broken engine, and fitted machinery which enabled her to steam to port at low pressure. The steamer presented an extraordin,, ary appearango, tho decks being piled with dead and dying horses. Altogether about 200 were lost.
