OBITUARY.
Mr R. D. BLACKMOEE. LONDON, January 22. Mr R. D. Blackmore, the popular novelist, has just died at the age ot seventy-five. Mr Blackmore had for many years been a prolific writer of fiction, and many of his books had wide circulation,. “Lorna Doonc,” perhaps his best-known work, and certainly the most admirable, was a charming story. Its appearance in 1869 gave the aritbor an assured place among English writers.
The death of Mr Wra. Foster, of Ghuznea street, announced in another column, removes from the earthly scene one who has for nearly twenty years played an active part in various Wellington circles. .Mr Foster was a member of the old Battery Corps, and from thence,liepassed into the Garrison Band, while-for r,ome years past and up till quite, recently he was bandmaster of the Foresters; Band. He took a keen interest in all musical matters, and was a prominent member of the Orchestral Society, in which organisation he played the bassoon. Although a member of the Masonic order and of the Foresters, it was as a musical enthusiast and teacher ot the divine art that Mr Foster was best known. The deceased, who never married, was attended in his fatal illness by Dr Henry .
