PERSONAL.
Mr Nicholas Reid, of the firm of Messrs W. and G. Turnb ill and Go., returned from a trip to Aus ’.-a ix by the Waikare last evening.
The Hon J. McKenzie, Minister for Lands, has signified his intention of bring present (Cabinet matters permitting) at the official opening ceremony and luncheon in connection with the Aramoho Freezing Works, Wanganui, on Friday next. The reputation, outside his own country, of Edward Bellamy, whose death was announced yesterday, rested entirely on “ Looking Backward,” and was hardly enhanced by his latest production, ‘ 1 Equality 1 a sequel to the former, which to most readers is but a tiresome dissertation on absurdly grotesque conditions, having none of the literary or constructive merit that distinguished the former work.
An exemplification of those pleasing little amenities which go to make private life harmonious, even while relations in the public arena are strained to the utmost tension, was given at Greytown yesterday, when Mr W. O. Buchanan, the member for Wairarapa, and a strong Oppositionist, was observed to take the fii at opportunity of placing his carriage at the disposal of Mrs Seddon and her daughters, and himself to act as their guide, philosopher and friend during their visit to the Maori pah at Papawai. A distinguished American soldier died at Baltimore last month in the person of Colonel Robert W. Scarlett, a cousin of Mrs T. Gilpin, of Havelock, Hawke's Bay, and also a relative of General Sir James Scarlett, who led the Heavy Brigade in their memorable charge at Balaclava. The deceased went to America shortly before the civil war and immediately joined the Fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer! on Lincoln’s first call to arms. He took part in the celebrated battle near Bull nun, and in all the engagements from Autitam an 1 Prsderioisburr, being finally honoprahly'discharged for disabilities sustained in active service. Colonel Scarlett served on the staff of the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and frequently represented the Department of Maryland as a delegate to the national encampment.
