MR MACDUFF BOYD'S CONCERT.
The snfeoess of the first of Mr Mao Duff Boyd’s subscription concerts last night, at Thomas* Hall, promises well for the series. 1 ho programme was popular, and the concert thoroughly enjoyable. Front’s delightful andante and minuets wore admirably played by Mias CbaUtroy Harris and Messrs Mac Duff Boyd. W. Brown and F. S. -Pope, and the fact that the formation of a permanent quartette party, whose performances shall be frequently beard in the future, is probable, will be matter of satisfaction for the many who would like tb fiee more attention paid to this branch of music. The duet “ Go, Pretty Rose ** was tastefully sung by Mrs Boyd and Miss Pownall. The ballad of Goring Thomas “The Winds in Trees,” was made much of by Miss Pownall, who phrases judiciously and infuses marked expression into what she sings. Miss Pownall was also excellent in Tosti’s naive ballad “I Couldn't, Could I.” Mr Doiigl&a Jackson. whose light teilor voice the public would glaaly bear more of. sang 44 The Southerners* Night Song** and “The Silver Ring,** both in capital style. The beautiful “Reverie** of Vieuxtomps, contributed by Mr Mao Duff Boyd, was one of the features of the concert, from its expression and altogether good st>le, and, the item was thoroughly appreciated by the audience. The duet by Mrs Boyd and Mr Douglas Jackson, “ Tell Her I Love Her So.’* was an excellent number. Miss Barber and Mr Boyd ‘played a welcome conoert-plooo, an andante, allegro and variations, for violin and pianoforte, by Beethoven, and the concluding item was another well-chosen instrumental number, a selection from “Fapst,** for pianoforte and strings, given by Miss Harris and Messrs Boyd and Pope. Mias Barber played the accompaniments tastefully.
