N.Z. SHIPMASTERS’ ASSOCIATION.
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Shipmasters* Association was held in the rooms yesterday. Present Messrs J. Duthie and G. Wilson, Captains King, Bornech, Wills, Manning, Fraser, Tinney, North, Gifford, Post and Kennedy (secretary). The Chairman, on his retirement from the position of president, said it was pleasing to note the increase in members during the year, the number having reached 188, and also the generally healthy condition shown. It was creditable to the Association, that no lives had been lost during the past year on the coast of Now Zealand, or any vessels whose captains were members of the Association. He regretted that the representations inreference to the better lighting of the coast had been so apathetically received by the Government. He then proposed the adoption of the report. Captain Manning seconded tho motion.
Consideration of the balance-sheet was, on the motion of Captain Manning, adjourned until next Monday,
Mr Duthie vacated tho chair in favour of Mr G. Wilson, the incoming president.
Captain Hart, having notified a wish to retire. Captain Lambert was appointed vice-president, to act with Captain Manning.
The trustees. Captains Babot and Johnson, were ro-elected, as was Captain Kennedy as secretary and treasurer. An application for an increase of salary by the secretary and treasurer was thou dealt with. A committee at a previous meeting had been set up to see into this matter, and decided that an increase of 50 per cent, bo granted, making the salary £75 per annum. After discussion the question of increasing the secretary’s salary was referred back again to the committee. Finally Captain Manning gave the necessary month’s notice in writing,“That a treasurer and book-keeper be appointed to act with the secretary,” and that the question ct the increase of the secretary's salary -remain in abeyance until this was settled. -
The places of the five retiring members of the Committee of Management were filled by Captains Jones, Mclntyre, Balding, Gifford and Mr Gilbertson, An account for lawyers* fees in defending Captain Furneaux, of the tug which had charge of the Yolande when she went ashore at Westport, was passed. Captain King moved that Mr Dufchie be asked to present a photograph of himself, to be hung on the walls of the Association’s rooms* This was carried.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring president for the manner in which he had interested himself in the Association’s affairs.
After the meeting closed Captain Kennedy received a telegram from Captain Strang, in Dunedin, regretting his inability to be present.
