CREYTOWN.
Sm.TAL to Tiff; New Zealand Times. Gkkytown, December J 7. For the fourth time in succession Mr J. 0. Heagmty has been installed as Mayor ol tho borough. Most of tho councillors were present, and Councillor F. IL Wood, hh senior councillor, congratulated fur Mcagcrty, and aDo tho borough on bis election, stating that His Worship had, during his terms of office, done everything possible to advance the interests of tbo borough, and that ho had over been rno.-t courteous to the councillors. Perfect harmony had always prevailed, and the Council had generally agreed with the measures introduced by the Mayor. Those sentiments were endorsed by the other councillors present, and tho Mayor iu a brief speech thanked tho councillors for their very kind remarks and thoir belief in his wish to farther the interests of tho borough. Ho commended the unanimity of feeling that had always prevailed, and thanked the Council for their very able assistance. . He stated that it would bo bis wish to continue tbo progressive works, and ho would not abate his cr.crgy in having such works continued, and he believed that when Ms term of office expired next year tho Matarawa bridge would have been ponipleted, tbo water scheme would be well on towards completion, and that another bridge over tho Ruamahunga. would bo commenced. 110 would endeavour to treat tho councillors with every courtesy and in a manner becoming his position, and he trusted that when they assembled next year for tbo same as they had mot to-day Hie same kindly feeling would be existent. Business of a local nature was then transacted, and tho appointment of Mr George Rutherford as Inspector of Dairies Tbo Mayor afterwards entertained Ids friends, and bis health was druni in bumpers. ~ , . There is quite a “gold fever here just now, in consequence of some specks--ap-patently gold—having been pumped up from two or throe wells in the borough. Some of tho speculative ones are intending to got an , engineer from Wellington and some men from tho West Coast to sink on tbo ground whore the first spooks wore obtained-, It is also stated that coal has been found in the laramas, and that a small piece of gold was obtained by a prospector from some fireclay deposit. This little piece was on view yesterday at Fabian’s Club Hotel, and many of the knowing ones predict that more will bo found in the aamo locality. . Everyone here la pleiweu to hear ol our late Liberal candidate, Mr Hornsby, baying been advanced in his profession. Ho gained ‘hosts of friends throughout tho district while here, and our good wishes go with him. It appears quite certain a Liberal paper will bo started here early in the New Year, promises of nearly sufficient capital having already been obtained, and the party are very sanguine of being able to bring the matter to a successful issue. The crops are suffering terribly tor want ol rain It is about six weeks since wc baa a drop. A little rain is falling now as I write.
