GREAT FIRE AT THE FIJIS.
THE BUSINESS PART OF SUVA DESTROYED. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, June 13. News from Fiji reports a disastrous fire at Suva ou 21st May, The damage is estimated at £30,000. Tbs entire block of buildings occupied by the leading commercial men of the town weie destroyed with their valuable stock. The origin of tbs lire is a mystery. It started in Marks and Co.’s store, and spread towards the beach, Tbe Post Office, Customhouse, and bonded stores narrowly escaped. H. Marks and Co. are the heaviest losers, the lasses outside insurance being £13,000. Sturt’s Suva Hotel was destroyed, tbe loss being £2500, Brodzick and Co. lost £2900 and others suffered considerable losses.
Tho insurances are—Hamburg and Magdeburg, £1400; New Zealand, £1525; Imperial, £B2O ; Northern, £1000; South British, £160; Hanseatic, £2425; Transatlantic, £3400. The unsecured losses are about £20,000, The crew of H.M.S, Cordelia rendered splendid services.
