A criminal summons has been sworn against the directors of the Premier Permanent Building Association, which closed its doors in February last, charging them with conspiring to defraud. The directors iucluda Messrs Dow, Minister of Agriculture, and J. Nimrno, late Commissioner of Public Works ; but the former has written to the press disclaiming all knowledge of fraudulent intent. The tailors on strike are resolute, though suffering distress. A number of the masters have conceded their demands. The railway men held a demonstration in Hyde Park. They demand 54 hours per week and higher wages, Mr Burns quoted the example of Victoria. A tramway strike is imminent. Mr Burns will organise and the men. It is stated that the trauce-like disease known as la nona has been ascertained to be a form of neuroses. It is believed that vigorous action cn the part of the Agents-Geueral at the Paris Telegraph Conference will secure a reduction of the charge for ordinary cable messages to the colonies to 5s per word. Mr Honniker Heaton is pressing the Government to supp >rt the reduction. New York, May 12. Cyclones passed over Ohio and other parts of America. Immense damage was done to property, but the loss of life was small. Constantinople, May 12. Djevdet Pacha, Minister of Justice, has been dismissed from office at the instance of Germany, Soria, May 12. An indictment preferred against Major Panitza, who is accused of taking part in the conspiracy to dethrone Prince Ferdinand, implicates the Russian Minister at Bucharest in a plot. - Berlin, May 12. It is rumoured that General von Caprivi, the Chancellor, intends to resign, the reason being that the tortuous mazes of diplomacy are foreign to his character.: Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have; received the following cable message from their London home, Messrs Sanderson,' Murray and Oof, regarding the wool : —“London, 10th May.—The sales have closed with rates unchanged. One hundred thousand bales are held over.; Compared with opening rates, the market shows no change for extra good greasy" merino. Greasy or scoured merino and fine crossbred declined 2£ to 6 per cent.”
