(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Blenheim, May 13. An adopted child, five weeks old, the daughter of a woman named Henderson, of Wellington, died at Pieton on Saturday in a state of great emaciation. It had a day or two before been seat o Platon in care of tho stewardess of a steamer, and Chough carefully nourished died as above. At the inquest a verdiot of death from natural causes was returned, but the jury censured the persona who sent It over in such a condition. . Marton, May. 13. At the inquest on L, C. Richards the verdict was suicide whilst temporarily , insane. Fkilding, May 13. Mr Batchelor, a builderof Wanganui, was driving bis wife on the Kimbolton, road yesterday, when the horse bolted. , Mrs Batchelor, becoming alarmed, jumped, out j and received a serious compound fracture of the loft Isg. Benjamin Saxelby, a Waitapu settler; died suddenly yesterday at Otaki of heart disease, i Christchurch; May 13. | The recent rains have been followed, by a severe frost. At a mee ing of tho Ambulance Society a letter was read from the Hospital Surgeon crediting the pupils with having saved the life of a man ran over by a train. . Eleven New Zealand fire brigades are now receiving instructions in ambulance, work. , ; Invercargill, May 13. ■ At 630 this morning a fire broke out in the bathroom of the Hibernian Hotel, a twostoried brick building in Dee street. A portion of the. building was completely gutted, and bat for the splendid municipal Water supply the whole block must have' gone, The origin is Unltnown. Mr A. Molnerney, tho lessee, is uninsured, and estimates bis loss on the furniture at £3OO. The damages to the building are estimated at £250.. The building, together with three ships under the same rOof, are Insured for £2500 in the National, but reinsured in the New Zealand, North German and two other offices for £SOO. Each portion of the furniture over which there is a mortgage is insured in the Colonial for £2OO. (prom our own correspondent.) , W bstpokt. May 13. The Westport Star agrees with the New Zealand Tikes’ opinion as to the satisfactory character of the reoeut engineering appointments, and adds, speaking of Mr C. 1. O’Connor :—“By his tact and ability, of which we have . had some experience in this district, he has gained golden opinions from all softs of people further, “The public of Westpart may reasonably expect an accession of energy in the prosecution of the harbour works to follow Mr O'Connor’s assumption of the charge. He will have the advantage of greater freedom in carrying on the work than has hitherto been accorded those in; authority, and if true to his reputation he will not be satisfied with a purely * governmeat stroke.’ ”
