COST OF THE GENERAL ELECTION IN 1881.

A return of the cost of compilation of rolls and cost of the election held in December last has been laid on the table in both Houses of the General Assembly. The totals are thus given : —Cost of compilation of rolls, £34oi 16s; cost of election, of European members, £4981 17s 7d ; coat of Maori elections, £B3O lls 3d ; total, £9215 4s lOd. The returns from the electoral districts in the Provincial D.strict of Wellington give the following figures —the first amount in each instance showing the cost of compilation of rolls and the second the cost of elections : Wairarapa North, £36 19s Id—£7B 13s 3d ; Waitotara, £4l 6s 4d—£l2 Is 3d ; Wairarapa South, £36 4s 7d —£47 lls ; Wellington South, £3O 10s 2d—£s2 12s 9d ; Te Aro, £2B 17s 2d —£26 5s ; Manawatu, £lO2 19s 6d—£22 lls 6d ; Thorndou, £2B 4a 2d—£66 14s 3d ; Hutt, £l9 15a —£54 7s 4d ; liangitikei, £65 10s 6d —£66 7s 9d; Wanganui, £49 Os lOd—£2o 13s ; Poxton, £33 16s—£71 15s 6d.
