DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES AT INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.
The distribution of prizes in connection with the Industrial Exhibition took place at the Athemeum Hall on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen. The prizes awarded were for oil paintings, water color paintings, crayon drawin-', mechanical drawing, writing and composition, and best specimen of writing. The prizes were presented to their various winners by Mr. Jonas Woodward, President of the Athemeum, who, in making the presentations, bad something pleasing to say to each of the recipients. Before the distribution Mr. Woodward said there was a person, whose name he would not mention, who had taken a great interest ia the exhibition, and who bad offered prizes for writing. .A very large number of exercises in penmanship had been sent in, and it was with the greatest difficulty that the judges were able to ascertain which of the number deserved the prize. He hoped, however—and he felt certain in his own mind—that the decision arrived at would please all the competitors. The prizes for the paintings, though perhaps of no great monetary value, would, ho was sure, be received by the prize-takers in the spirit in which they had been offered by the committee. Mr. Woodward then distributed the prizes as follows Oil painting—lst prize, Mrs. T. 0. Williams ; subject, “ Portrait copy,” exhibited in room No. 1 J 2nd prize, Mr, S. Howell ; subjoot,“\Vhitby Abbey,”exhibited in room No. 1. Water colors—lst prize, Miss F. M. Greenwood ; subject, “Headwaters ofthe Waimakariri river,” exhibited room No. 3. Crayon drawing 3rd priz-, Miss J. Barraud ; subject, “ Nuggets from Coombe Hay, room No, 3, Mechanical drawing—lst prize, F. J. W. Fear ; subject, “Vertical Engines,” room No. 1. Writing and composition—lst prize. Miss Caroline Brown (Mount Cook School); 2nd prize, Mias Violet Haselden (Mount Cook School). Best specimen of writing—lst prize, John Overend (Thorndon School) ; 2nd prize, Walter Petherick (Te Aro School, late of Mount Cook School). Honorable mention was given to “Utopia,” “Polyanthus,” and J. Blackwell for composition, and “Lily,” “Tota, “ Turtle,” and “ Mous ” for writing. Mr. J. E. Nathan having kindly presented tho committee with £5 for prizes, it has been decided to offer prizes for the following descriptions of ladies’ work:—Crewel work, Berlin work, knitting, crochet, lacework, and embroidery. The prizes will be awarded by a committee of ladies.
