A private telegram from Adelaide says Mata won two other races besides the Cup at the Adelaide Meeting. Mr. Driver will probably nominate Somnus and Sir Modred for the next Melbourne Cup. New Plymouth, May 29. At the annual meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club last night receipts during the year were shown to be £1092, and the expenditure £1065, leaving a balance of £9O to be carried forward.

Ashsurton, May 29. To-day a man named John Goldberg, a frequenter of race courses, was brought before the Bench, charged under the Vagrant Act with being a rogue, and with having at the Tinwald Steeplechase yesterday swindled the public with a pretended game of chance. The

evidence showed that the accused was playing with a box containing seven red, seven black, and one white ball, laying even money against the chances on one of the led or black balls coming out of the orifice in the box on lifting the shoe, and twelve to ene against the white ball coming out. On being seized, Iho box was found to be so mads that the podtion of the shoe indicated to him the color of the ball in the orifice. When the accused was searched a pack of stripped cards, a box and dice, and other gambling requisites, found on him. Mr. Brandon, who appeared for the prisoner, urged that the course was not open to the public—the place, within the meaning of the Act, being the private property of Mr. Carter. The Bench reserved its decision till the afternoon, when the case was dismissed, Christchurch, May as.

At the Canterbury Jockey Club meeting to-day, the Spring Meeting programme was passed. It is the same as last years. The disqualification of Miss Domett by the Dunedin Jockey Club was endorsed. ~ Mr. E. G. Griffiths is to receive a salary of £IOO for handicapping during the year 1881-82. Notice of motion was given that members receiving a paid appointment retire from the club while holding such appointment.
