RIO PLATE WOOL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In reference to the import to Europe of Rio Plate wool, furnished in the Kew Zealand Times of the Ist September last, I beg to state that the wool B fason there is stated in Latham’s work, to commence on the Ist November and end on 31st October; consequently, on the 30th June, but four months remained of the 1873-4 season, during which, I suspect, but little wool would be exported from Kio Plate, it being so near Europe and the United States that all the annual clip may be assumed to have been sent out during the first eight months of the wool year of the States on that river. Youi- statement is, that 176,909 bales were, imported to six ports in Europe in the six months ending 30th June. A large number of bales also go to the United States. Thus, in. 1865-6, the Rio Plate exported 150,453 bales, containing 120,362,0001b5., besides 20,761 bales, sheepskins weighing 4,152,2001b5. Of this, 28,000,0001b5. of wool—or 35,000 bales—went: to the United States of America. It may be well to call attention to the fact, that the balesstated above are shown to average SOOIbs. each; though presumed to be in the grease still, the weight is about double that of bales sent from Australia, assuming again, that wool sent from Melbourne to the United States is, on account of relative rate of duty,, also in grease; for on dividing the pounds by 2000 bales sent not long since to the United States, from Melbourne, the result was but 3901b5. per bale. The “World’s Wool,” from Melbourne Argus „ quoting from Mr. Schwartze's annual circular, states apparently, imported to Europe, from Rio Plate, at 86,617 bales in 1864, and 234,960 balesinlß63. The “World’s Wool” article does not mention eleven countries from which England imported 36,000,000 in 1870, an omission equal to 45,000 Rio Plato bales—or about 90,000 Australasian bales—unless they be included in Rio Plate.—Yours, &c., Samuel Revans. Woodside, September 3.
