MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
MR. MOODY IN TE ARO WARD. A meeting of the supporters of Mr. Moody was held at the Victoria Hotel, on • Saturday night, which at the opening was rather poorly attended, but 1 as the evening wore on the room became well filled. Mr. John Smith was voted to the chair, and made a few brief introductory remarks, intimating that the candidate was quite prepared to answer any questions which might be put. In reply to questions fay different ratepayers present, Mr. Moody expressed himself to the following effect: —He thought that the streets should be maintained and cleaned by the result of public tender, and that the City Surveyor should see that the work was properly carried out. He would also suggest that all back yards and premises should be cleaned on the same principle. He objected to the Inspector of Nuisances being allowed a clerk, as he thought the additional expense incurred was an entirely unnecessary one. That official received a good salary, and should do the work himself. If the inhabitants of the localities of private streets contributed to their formation the works connected with them should be contracted for, and the cost would then be generally known; under the present system no one seemed to know the cost of any work executed by -the Council. If elected, he would do the best he could in the interests of the ratepayers, and would support any movement calculated to benefit thefr Ward, or the City generally. A x-esolution was then passed, to the effect that in the opinion of the meeting Mr. Moody was a fit and proper
person to represent the Ward.. A committee of nine was then formed for the purpose of taking steps to ensure the return of Mr. Moody, and a vote of thanks to the chairman closed the proceedings.
