HOCKEY.

THE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

As both the Senior and Third-class Championships have been decided, interest in hockey is centred m the result of the Junior Championship, now in its final stages. This contest practically lies between last year's winners—the Wellingtons—and the United team. The latter is at present a point ahead, with two more matches to play, bo that the contest is likely to be a keen one right to the end. _ United defeated Karori at Day s Bay on Saturday afternoon by 5 goals to nil. The game was robbed of interest by Karori turning up two men short, and so hampering the play of their opponents, who were continually penalised for offside play. It does not seem fair that a team'should be placed in so awkward a position through its opponents _ not mustering a full team, ana the incident calls for a modification in the present rule, which demands that when a man hits the ball there must be three of his opponents between him and the goal he is attacking, otherwise he is “off-side,” and is duly penalised. This flaw in the rule has been very marked in several games this season. It should be considered by the New Zealand Association before next hockey season. Tor United Fitzgerald scored three goals, and Guy and Matthews one each. Mr K. Morpeth acted as referee. At Miramar Wellington scored a win from Wesley by two goals to nil. Thorndon mpt Victoria College at Day's Bay, the former winning after a good game by three goals to two. Y.M.C.A. defeated Vivian by 3 to 2. Scorers for Y.M.C.A., Wheatley, Good, and Wickett. Third-class Championship Victoria College A defeated Y.M.C.A. by 10 to nil. Thorndon v. Victoria College; played on No. 3 ground Day's Bay, resulted in a win for Thorndon by 3 goals to 2. Carde, J. Foote, and G. Foote scored for Thorndon, And Bogle and Donovan for College. Mr Porter was referee. Thorndon v. United match (third-class) was played on No. 2 ground Day's Bay; and resulted in a win for United by 4 goals to nil. Scorers—Buckie (2), Swinburne, and McLean. Thorndon played three men short in the first spell, and through one of their men being hurt on the field, played four short in the second half. Mr Day had charge of the game. BLENHEIM. September 7. The Kiwi Hockey Club, Wellington, ' played the Hinekoa Ladies' Club at Blenheim to-day. An exciting game resulted in a draw, one goal being scored on each side. Mies Edwin scored for the visitors, and Miss Elbeck for the home team. Yesterday the Kiwis were defeated by the Marlborough Hockey Club by 4 goals to 1/but they were in better form today. To-morrow evening the visitors "will be entertained at a dance.
