LATE COMMERCIAL NEWS.

FRIDAY’S WOOL AND SKIN SALES. The New Zealand Loan and. Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., reports: Ouv catalogue comprised about 1300 sheepskins, 26 hales, and a number of bags of wool, about 200 hides, and a quantity of tallow. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was keen for good lot®. We quote: — •Wool—Crossbred fleece, coarse 74d to 8d; lambs, dingy 7fd; pieces and dead, 1 4’ d to 7d; crutchings, medium to 7d. seedy to 6d. Sheepskins—Fine crossbred and merino, 8d to B£d; coarse, 6|d to 7fd'; inferior and dead, 5d to 6^d;lambs, inferior and dead, 5d to G*d, prjme to 8d; green and salted 'skins, 4s 6d to 6s lQd. Hides—Heavy ox, 22s 6d to 265, light 14s to 18s; cow, heavy 18s to 225, light 12s to 17s; calf, 2s to 3s 6d; yearlings, 4s to 6s 6d. in shipping order, 19® 6d to 20s pe’* cwt. Murray, Roberts and Co. report:—— We offered 40 bales wool, 1800 sheepskins, 350 hides and calfskins, and a small lot of tallow. With few exceptions offerings of wool were inferior lots, and bidding consequently was slow, prices ruling a shade easier than at last sale. Skins, on the other band, were eagerly bought at prices well up to late values. Hides were inclined to ease in price. Tallow sold up to late rates. Prices ruling were as under:— Wool —Crossbred medium, 7ld to Bid per lb; crutchings, good clean, to 7ad; crutchings, inferior to med'ium, 4Jrl to 6|d; pieces, locks, etc., Bid to &£d. Skins Crossbreds, fine, to Bid; crossbred, coarse to medium, to &|d; crossbreds, dead and inferior pelted, 5-|d to 7d; lambs, 6£d to B*d. Hides Medium ox, 8s 6d to 21s 6d each; light ox, 14s to 17s 6d each; medium to heavy cow, 15s 6d to 20s 6d each; light cow, 13s to 14s 6d each;

calf and yearling, Is 9d to 6s each. Tallow, in casks,' medium to 19s 6d. Date of next sale is September Ist. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report: — Prices for dead wool and crutchings were about the same as last sale, but skins showed a drop of £d per lb all round. Hides also showed a slight decline. We quote:—Wool—Crossbred fleece, 7id to 8d; crutchings, good 6£d to 6fd, inferior s£d to 6id; dead wool, 6d to 6-ld. Skins —Good full-woolled crossbred, 7-|d to 8d; three-quarter wool, 7\d to 7fd; dead and inferior, 6d to 6Jd. Hides—Heavy ox, 25s to 26s 6d: inferior ox, 18s to 19s 6d; cow, best 16s to 20s; inferior, 13s to 15s 6d ; yearlings, 7s 3d to 8s; calf skins, 3s 6d to 4s 6d. Our next sale is on the Ist September. Levin and Co., Ltd., report:—We offered 50 bales wool. 2500 skins, 850 hides, and a quantity of horsehair and tallow’. The wool consisted mainly of crutchings, but the demand for this class of wool seems to have slackened, and prices showed a further decline. Best crutchings may now be quoted at 6i- to 7d, medium 6d to 6ld, an 1 inferior 5d to s§d; fine halfbred crutchings bring 7d to 7id. Skins shcw’ed an easier tendency, and last •sale values wore barely maintained. We quote:—Merinos, 8d to B.\d; fine crossbreds, 7\d to S^d; coarse crossbreds 7td to 7£d; dead, 6d to 6-^d; short wools, 6d to 6RI ; lamb skins, 7rtl to 7§d ; butchers’, green 5s 6d to 7s 2d each. Tallow, in casks 19s 6d, tins 17s 9d rough fat 14s 6d. Hides—There' was a large entry. Prices wore hardly up to last sale. We quote: Cow, light to medium 14s to 17s, heavy to 19s; ox, light to medium 18s to 235, heavier to 275; calf skins, 2s Gd to ss. Horsehair, Is 4d ; cow tails, Is Od per dozen. STOCK REPORT. Abraham and Williams, Lid., report on their sales at Palmerston on Thursday : Sheep Two and four-tooth

wethers, 18s; two-tooth wethers, 16s 3d to 17s; hoggets, 15s Gd ; light fat bullocks, £7 15s; three-year bullocks, £5 7s 6d; two-and-a-lialf and three-year steers, £4 4s; two-year steers, £3 to £3 17s; fat cows, £4 17s 6d : springing heifers, £4 10s to £5; springing cows, £5 to £6 10s; weaners, 21s to 29s 6d; store cows, 36s to £2 os; forward cows, £2 10s to £3. At the various dairy sales held during the last week, good springing cows have sold readily at prices ranging from £6 to £9; and good springing heifers up to £5 • late calving cows and low-conditioned cows at prices ranging from £2 10s to £4. LONDON PRODUCE REPORT. The Dej>artment of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New' Zealand, dated London, 19th instant:—

The mutton market -is quiet, but steady, 'the average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4|d per lb light weights, and 3|d per lb heavy weights: North Island mutton 4£d per lb light weights, and 3fd per lb heavy weights. The lamb market is weak, and the demand is falling off. Supplies of home-grown lamb are heavy, and are lowering prices of New Zealand lamb. The average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is s£d per lb, and for brands other than Canterbury, >£d p?r lb. tegs 44d. The beef market is dull. Supplies of River Plate beef are heavy. The average price to-day for hindquarters of New Zealand beef is 3|d per lb, fores p-oi j, o.

The batter market is firm, and there is a good demand. Danish, 121 s; Canadian, 100 s; Siberian, 103 s; Australian winter make (small arrival), 107 s. The butter prospects for next season are more favourable than last year. The cheese market is firm, with a good demand. Canadian, 545. The hemp'market is quiet, and small business is doing. The stock is heavy. The price of New Zealand hemp, “good fair Wellington” grade, on spot, to-day, is £27 iOs- . ugust-October shipments, £2B. The price of Manila hemp, “fair current” grade, on spot, to-day, is £36 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet, but holders are firm. The average price for bright, clean, New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171 b per bushel, on spot, is 53s per cwt. The current Bradford quotations for tops are: —-36’ s_, low crossbreds, Is 4d per lb; 40’s, low crossbreds, Is 4£d; 44’s, medium crossbreds, Is s£d; 50’s, halfbreds, Is 9d; 56’s, quarterbreds, Is lOd; 60’s, merinos, 2s 2d.
