HAWKE’S BAY v. AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, March 29. A two days’ cricket match was commenced on the Auckland Domain to-day between Hawke’s Bay and Auckland. The weather, although threatening at the commencement of play, held fair. A good wicket had been prepared, and it lasted fairly well. The spectators could be counted by scores. Auckland won tlio toss, and baited, their innings realising 248. It began disastrously, and 5 wickets were lost for GO, but a good partnership between .Smith and Macf’ormick made ibings lack brighter. Smith played a fine innings for 112.

AUCKLAND, March 25. HaAA'ke’s Bay continued to hat today. The Aveather was fine, but the wicket a little bumpy. The attendance was only moderate. Haivke’s Bay, Avith a deficiency of 143 runs, had to follow on. The hatting AA'as painfully sloaa\ but Hall showed good form for 39. Hussey Avas in good form Avith the ball, as also was Stemson. CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. In senior play on Saturday, Lancaster Park A defeated Midland A by eight AA'ickcts, and AA'on the championship. Hugo Wolf rode out twenty miles with Ghas. Smith, who on Thursday night at 10 o’clock started out to break the Wellington-Napier road record. Smith made good time to Mas-tert-on. hut encountered a gale at Ekeahuna and abandoned the task. The record is held by W. A. Thomson, of this city, his time being 18 hours 1 linute, established on 26tli Nov., 1897 Hie distance is 230 miles. Thomsor added to this splendid performance the folloAving records :—'Wellington to Mnsterton. 75 miles, 4f hours; Wellington to Eketahuna, 98 miles, G hours 40 minutes, and finished the last 40 miles in the record time o-f 2 hours 6 minutes, a Ncav Zealand record. When Thomson broke this record he established the third fastest road race for this distance in the AVorld. It Avill be of interest a our readers to remind them that Thomson still holds over 30 records in various parts of the colony.
