A boy named Charles Short, 10 years of age. son of the chief cook of tho Occidental Hotel, died on Tuesday evening from injuries received nearly a month ago by falling off a tree about 12ft on to a concrete pavement in Bowen street. The fall caused a fracturo of the skull, and until Saturday last tho poor boy, who was attended by Dr James, made wonderfully rapid progress. On that day, however, he struck his head against a tap, a relapse set in, and the further injury received resulted in his death. During the month of May 87 applications for patents were received at tho Patent Office, of which seven came from Wellington. The number of applications for registration of trade marks was 12, three of which were from Wellington,
