An adjourned meeting of the School Committees’ Association was held in the Willis street School on Dec. 12, when there were 15 delegates present, Mr J. H. Shine (Newtown) presiding. Mr J. Robertson acted as secretary. Mr Jennings (Vogeltown) moved the first resolution, which was as follows : “ That with a view of promoting the best interests of education a rational series of works be used in the public schools, and that the same should be printed at the Government Printing Office.” v This was seconded by Mr Hutchinson (Kilbirnie), and carried. The Chairman moved and Mr Prowse (Te Aro) seconded:—“That this meeting is of opinion that evening continuation schools should be established, as an assistance to primary education, capable of giving instruction up to the matriculation examination, on lines similar to those in vogue in England, France, Germany and Switzerland.”

This was qarried after some discussion. It. was decided to hold the next meeting of; the Association early in January, the date to be arranged by the chairman and secretary. . .

At an examination in practical plumbing on Saturday at the School of Design, twenty - one candidates presented themselves. Messrs T. Ballinger and R. Scott were the examiners, and Messrs F. Smith and. H., Dryden the . supervisors. There was also an examination of 18 candidates in light and shade drawing, Mr J. A. Tripe being the supervisor. A meeting of the Court of Convocation of the New Zealand University is to be held in the University Library, on tfie 9th January next. The University December examinations (local) were commenced on Tuesday in the Legislative Council Chamber, 94 candidates presenting themselves, as against 102 last year. The classification is as follows: -—Music intermediate, 1 ; barrister’s general knowledge, I;.junior scholarships, 6; medical preliminary, 6 ; matriculation, 80. The examinations are expected to last till Thursday week (inclusive). At the meeting’ of the Wellington Education Board on Wednesday letters were read from the Carterton and Petone School Committees suggesting that truant officers should be appointed. The Board decided to reply, that it was in the power of committees to lay informations against people who did not send their children to school. The Education Board has decided to create a separate school district for Mitchelltown, instead of having the local school managed by the Te Aro Committee. At the last meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, a resolution that the schools be staffed upon the working average was rescinded, and it was resolved that the strict average be employed.

It was decided at the meeting of the Board of Education on Wednesday to grant additional scholarships to Harriet Jenkins (Thorndon) and Alfred Gdlin.(Mount Cook Boys’), they having been bracketed by the Inspectors v/ith Maria Hitchcock (Mount Cook Girls’), who was awardtfd a scholars ship at the previous meeting,'
