LAND AND STOCK STATISTICS OF THE COLONY.

The following results of the Census taken in April last, relating to land and stock, are published for general information in Thursday’s Gazette by the Registrar-General : Return showing the extent of occupied land in holdings of over one acre, and the live stock held by Europeans, according to the Census of sth April, 1891, compared with the results of the Census of 1886.

Note.—l 79 ostriches are not included. * The figures for the Crown pastoral lease and small grazing runs are, as stated by the Crown Lands Department, and not taken from Census results. + Besides the extent of occupied land shown in this table, 891,846 acres of unoccupied and unused freehold land were returned in the Census schedules, as against 768,281 in 1886. _ J The number of sheep does not agree with that published by the Stock Department: (1) the Census returns are for the sth April, the returns to the Stock Department are made up to the 30th April, while a considerable number of sheep were slaughtered in the interval: (2) it is believed that there is a want of completeness in the returns to the Stock Department. § The Maori Census 1891 and 18S6 showed the following totals for sheep, cattle, and pigs (which are not included above) owned by Maoris Sheep.
