COUNTRY NEWS.

PAHIATUA.

(from our own correspondent). March 25.

The Napier people have pushed their railway south to Woodville, and wo realise that you in your turn will very shortly ward. This” involves the momentous question whether said line shall go through Pahiatua or not. I have kept yon informed of our action ; now [have to add that about 16th March the Public Works Department made a statement. “Where,” you ask, and “ to, whom ?” This I know not ; but that is your bastard democrat all over. He gives a prior tip to the. Press Association agent, it is put on the wires, and when convenient can be repudiated. The statement is in three paragraphs. Tbe P.W.D (1) believe our main roads subject to floods ; (2) believe they hold land not contiguous to main road ; (3) believe they never promised to run rails down main road. Well, first of all, I wish the P.W.D. would make their statement officially, publicly, and over the signature of some get-at-able person. Then I will reply to it ; not now. Our Railway Committee met on Thursday, and instructed Mr J. T. Carr to examine country and report on Knorpp’a report. Carr seema a kind of Balaam. He wss sent for to curse Knorpp, and as far as private gossip goes he is blessing him. He says Knorpp* knows his business, that the report is-sure to be all right, that all we can do i 3 to consider whether some slight modification of the located line would suit us, and then see whether we could, raise any points outside Knorpp’s report, such as the recent spread of settlement; westward. You must understand tho above is goßsip. On the 313 t I will for—ward Mr Carr’s report, if not confidential^
