The cargoes of wooi by the Deleomyn, Duke of Devonshire, and Northern Hapsburg, have been admitted to the wool sales, making the total number of bales now available 268,000. The Caledonian Gold Mining Company, Charters Towers, is now allotting shares. The Conquering Hero Mining Company, Coromandel, has been withdrawn from the market.
The leading Colonial Financial Companies have requested the Agents-General to urge Sir Henry Holland to amend the Companies Act, of 1883, which requires proof of will in England, and compels doable probate duty for shares acquired in Companies registered in the colonies.
The Australian. Wine Importers’ Company will be registered on Saturday. The first issue of shares will be 10,000 £5 shares, and Mr Collins, the promoter of the Company, receives 1500 fully paid-up. London, January 27. Four hundred dozen of New South Wales exhibition wines have been sold by auction at 17s 6d to 18s 6d. The fittings of the court of the same colony realised £328. Mr L. Beecher Cowens, formerly Secretary of the Equitable Fire Office, Manchester, succeeds Mr D. Christie as manager of the fire department of the South British, National, and Adelaide Marine and Fire Insurance Companies. Mr Hugh Bannister, of the firm of Hankey and Bannister, wine merchants, advises the formation of centres in the colonies to ensure the similarity of successive vintages. The frozen meat by the Orizaba, from Melbourne, is selling at 4£d, and that from Sydney, at 4d. The cargo by the Arawa is realising 4fd. . London, January 29.
The wool market is firm. Since the opening of the series 50,000 bales have been catalogued, of which 2900 have been withdrawn. Messrs Jacomb and Co. report an average rise on scoured merinos of fully 10 per cent, other sorts from 7 to 10 per cent, good lambs, 10 per cent, cross-breds from sto 10 per cent. The correct number of bales available is 250,000. The wheat market is depressed, and no fresh sales are reported. The supply is above the market demands. Quotations for Australian cargoes on the spot are unchanged. Sellers of the new crop are asking 27s Bd. Samuel Allsop and Son, pale ale brewers, intend to convert their business into a Company, with a capital of £3,500,000. (reuter’s telegrams.) London, January 26. At the colonial wool sales to-day 12,200 bales were offered, tbe market being firm. Hobaet, January 28. Arrived, last evening Tarawera, from Bluff.
London, January 27. Consols remain at 100!-. The bank rate continues at 5 per cent., and the market rate at The bank of England weekly returns show the total reserve in notes and bullion to be £12,900,000, an increase of £1,200,000 during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 47 per cent. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock remains at 94£. The wool market continues firm, and at to-day’s sale coarse crossbreds ruled Id higher, and scoured wools lfd higher than last sales’ closing rates. To-day’s catalogue comprised 10,100 bales, making a total of 29,400 offered since the opening; of these 2000 have been withdrawn from sale. Colonial breadstuff's and tallow are without quotable change. Melbourne, January 29. Arrived —U.S.S. Tarawera. Sydney, January 29. Wheat is selling at 3s 9d to 4s; oats, 2s 4d to ,2s 7d ; maize, 4s 6d per 561 b ; and sugar, Company’s No. 1 pieces, £25 per ton. Sydney, January 30. Arrived —Union Company’s s.s. Mararoa.
London, January 28. Consols, 100£. New Zealand 5 per cent. 10-40 loan is 10s lower, 102 , New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock is 10s higher, 95. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,990,000 quarters, being 80,000 quarters less than lash week. Colonial breadstuff's remain unchanged. Australian beef tallow is 6d higher, 25s 6d ; mutton tallow, 6d higher, 30s. At the colonial wool safes to-day 10,700 bales were offered. The market continues firm. New Zealand mutton is selling at from 4£d to 4f d. London, January 30. The wool market continues firm. The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company’s Shannon haw arrived at Plymouth.
