COMMERCIAL NEWS

The Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington for the week ending on Saturday amounted to L 3978 12s lOd. Beer duty, L 69 17s 9d. , „ Messrs George Thomas and Co. report produce prices this week as follows : —The market is easier for every description of grain except wheat, and the demand has slackened considerably. Supplies of oats are far in excess of local requirements, and. although .present quotations show no alteration there is every prospect of a decline of Id per bushel or so in the near future ; prices rule from 2s 6cl to 2s 9d, according to quality. A considerable reduction in the ruling value of maize is imminent,, as we hear of large parcels on the water, which are for positive sale ; as the demand is limited prices may be expected to rule from 33 4d to 3s 6d per bushel for parcels. Old potatoes are quite a glut, and sales have been effected at sporting prices, say from 25s to 50s per ton ; for the time of the year samples are in very fair condition ; we note the arrivals of first consignments of the new crop, which are selling at 2Jd per lb. THE WOOL SALES We are indebted to Messrs Jacomb, SoiT and Co., wool brokers, of 61 Moorgate-street, 0 London,, for the following communication relative to the recent wool sales.:—“ The fourth series of public sales of colonial wools commenced on the 7th inst. As was to have been expected froml the general course of thev market since the close of last auctions here onthe 17th of July, great strength is now exhibited ; the attendance from all . parts islarger than ever before, and competition has! been proportionately spirited. Thus far an almost complete clearance has been made or all offered, and the second day’s sale fully maintained, and accentuated, the advance established at the opening, Thus far the Home--trade have taken about 51 per cent of ther quantity sold. Stocks of wool in all the seatsof consumption are very light, more especially so in the Home manufacturing districts. Ap compared with the closing rates of > July auctions, prices now rule, for Australian and New* Zealand grease merino, lid per lb higher;! merino washed fleece and scoured, fully 2d-;; finer crossbred, lid ; coarser, Id ; Cape and/ Natal grease, 2d ; scoured, 2id to 3|d. With, only a short supply visible in the immediate future, there should be little doubt of this; currency being well upheld for some months tocome. At the present rate of progression, thisseries is likely to'be materially curtailed from the 7th of October, as originally fixed.”
