It; is announced that Mr Suttor, the Postmaster-General, has made a counter proposal to the New Zealand Government with reference to the increase of the cable rates, but the nature of the communication has not yet transpired. Adelaide, October 20.

Mr Derharn, Postmaster-General, replying to a proposal of Mr Suttor, Postmaster-General of New South Wales, that Victoria should contribute to a subsidy for the New Zealand cable, has stated that toe Victorian Government declined to contribute except on a federal basis, which should include all the cables connecting with Australia.

At the reception at the Town Hall one of the best speeches was made by the Mayor of Wellington. The Mayor of Auckland also spoke. Yesterday the guests were taken round the harbpr, and afterward entertained at a bauquet at Cabarita, Parramatta Biver. The Mayor of Wellington was amongst those who responded. Brisbane, October 14.

Mr Palmer has given notice of motion declaring that, in view of the impossibility of obtaining a substantial reduction in the cable rates to Europe from the present Cable Company, the Government be empowered to join with one or more of the other colonies in a subsidy to a Cable Company for the construction of a deep-sea cable to Europe. News has been received at Cooktown of an outrage by the New Guinea natives on the steamboat Koredo. Four persons were killed aud two wounded. Whilst lying in one of the New Guinea harbors the vessel was surrounded by native boats. The natives, without warning, seized the captain and speared him, and some others. The boatswaio, who was armed, made a gallaut resistance, and killed one native and wounded two others. The rest then fled.
