ARREST OF AN ENGLISHMAN BY AMERICANS.
(united pbess association.l Auckland. October 18. It has transpired that Mr G. F. Sherwood, who recently went to Samoa in connection with the great land claims case, and who returned by the mail steamer Mararoa, was under arrest on board the American mau-of-yrar Mohican, He was-arrested by a party of bluejackets while on board the steamer Explorer at the instance 'of the Americau Consul (Greenbaura), and then seDt ashore without his. luggage. Finally, after nearly two days detention, he was taken by the captain of the Mohican and placed on board • the .. mail steamer. No charges were made against him, but profuse regret 3 were expressed prior to bib liberation. Mr Sherwood is an English subject, and was for over 16 years a leading man in the Taranaki provincial district, taking part in tbe Provincial Council, County Council, and other bodies. He has complained od the subject.of his arrest to the English Government, and leaves for London shortly to prosecute a claim for damages against tbe United States Government.
