FIRES.
(UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.' AUCKLAND, October 19. The blacksmith and cooperage premises at Onehunga, occupied by James Gibbons, were destroyed by fire at 4 a.m. to-day. The contents were demolished, inclusive of £4OO worth 1 of cooperage machinery, lately imported, a steam engine, tools, &c. The origin of the fire is unknown. The premises and stock are insured in the Union offics for £4BO. The total loss is estimated at £IOOO. An incipient fire was discovered last night at Hill’s large wooden block, Eden terraoe, but was extinguished promptly. Incendiarism is strongly suspected, but after the recent acquittal by the jury tbe police feel disinclined to prosecute the suspected party. Had the fire not been discovered, a very extensive block of buildings would have been destroyed. It is stated that the stock in the shop where the outbreak took place yesterday was insured for £2OO.
Chbistchuech, October 19.
Mr E. E. Reece’s store and dwellinghouse, at Doylesfcon, were burned down at 1 a.m. to-day. The insurance was—on the building £l5O in the Colonial, and stock £IOO in the Standard office!
