The harbormaster at Westport j notifies . through the Gazette that while dredging operations are proceeding between the coal staiths and Railway Wharf, or at the Railway Wharf, or other part of Westport Harbor, a red light will be shown all night on the dredge. When steamers are coming up the river a green light will also.be shown on one side of the red light. On whatever side of the red light the green is shown, is the aide on which such incoming steamers or other vessels are to* pass the dredge. The dredge is moored head and stern with four moorings, which will be sunk sufficiently to allow vessels to pass, and a watchman is kept on board. During the day a red flag will be waved to indicate on which side of the dredge to pass. Experienced fine weather down the Coast. She sailed for Southern Ports and Melbourne on Monday. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Hauroto arrived from Sydney at 1.30 pm Sunday. She left that port at 5 pm on the 21st, and experienced a strong “ southerly buster,” accompanied with heavy squalls and lightning, which moderated at midnight. This was followed by NE and light winds, which continued until arrival. She passed the_ ss Wakatipu at 3.30 pm on" Saturday, She sailed for the South on Tuesday. At 3.50 pm on Sunday, when she was between Jackson’s Head and Stephen’s Island, the high-pressure cylinder burst and the cylinder cover was thrown up, falling down into the engine-room, fortunately without injuring anybody. Steam was immediately shut off from the broken cylinder and the steamer headed for Wellington, where she arrived under canvas as above, working the low-pressure cylinder. She has been moored alongside the Lion Foundry, where the necessary repairs will be carried out. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s chartered barque- Ganymede, which left here at noon on Wednesday last week, arrived at Timaru on Monday morning. She loads there for London as the first wool" ship. A p>reliminary inquiry was held by the Collector of Customs on Tuesday afternoon into the circumstances attending the accident which happened to the ss Star of the South on Sunday last, and of which particulars have been published. Charles Hodge, master of the steamer ; Thomas Henry Davidson, engineer ; and James Fleming, second engineer, were examined. It appears from the evidence of the two latter that the high-pressure cylinder cover and circulating pump cover were broken, and that the cause of the' accident, according to their opinion, was the breakage of the crank pin bolts. The piston having, in consequence, no resistance to overcome, and being on the up stroke, was driven through the cylinder cover, which, being a strong one, carried with it the cylinder flange. The chief engineer stated that after examining the fracture of the bolts, he was of opinion that the iron was of inferior quality. The second engineer stated that the bedplate was in a somewhat shaky condition, and this might have caused a jerking strain upon the crank brass bolts beyond their power of resistance. This concluded the inquiry, and the evidence will be forwarded in the usual manner to the Marine Officer for the latter to decide whether a magisterial inquiry will be necessary. One of the owners of the Star of the South was expected here by the Rotorua oh Wednesday, to make the necessary arrangements for the repairs to be carried out.
