THE LEAGUE CODE
NOMINATION OF TEAMS
The nomination of nine teams for the senior grade competition was received at last night's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League. The chairman. Mr. J. W. Watson, said this was very encouraging, but there was no immediate hrfrry to finalise the position, or to hasten the draw for the preliminary round, which opens on Saturday week. He said the Senior Clubs' Officers' Association would be consulted before next meeting, when more details of the various clubs' strengths would be known. Mr. R. Doble drew attention to the fact that it was originally intended to limit the senior championship to seven clubs, with a preference for six well-balanced teams. It. was decided to defer the draw for the opening day until next Wednesday. A deputation from an Army unit in regard to the entry of a team in the senior grade competition pointed out that a number of prominent players would be available each Saturday, but several were members of registered local clubs. In answer to a question, Mr. Watson said transfers to the Army team from local clubs would not be favourably considered. It was decided to defer the question of affiliation until next weefc when more information on the personnel would be known. In recognition of his splendid services to the code, a presentation will be made at a social function next Thursday evening to the retiring chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell. The secretary, Mr. I. Culpan, is in charge of the arrangements. The chairman reported that satisfactory arrangements were being made for the erection of suitable dispersal gates for the speedy release of patrons at Carlaw Park in the event of an emergency.
