GAOL FOR DEFAULTER
COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES ("BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Wednesday "It would be extremely foolish to send you to a defaulters' detention camp, considering your subversive activities and your capabilities for mischief among the young men of this Dominion," said Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., to Michael Young, aged 24, who pleaded guilty to failing to report for military service. He was stated by the police to be one of the leaders of the Pacifist movement. Mr. Stout sentenced him to three months' hard labour.
Tho magistrate remarked that Young had been carrying on with his endeavours to get other young men to refuse military service. In reference to complaints by Young, Mr. Stout said that his case might have been considered genuine by the Appeal Board if he had kept his views to himself and not gone out of the way to be subversive and to obstruct the police.
