STANDARDISING DOCTORS
Sir,—An interesting talk by a lamous economist of world-wide repute was rebroadcast from London by the Gov-ernment-controlled main national stations of New Zealand last Monday evening. This economist emphasised the fact that both in Soviet Russia at the commencement of their five-year plans, and in Germany at the beginning of the war, the wages of all workers were standardised at the same level for everyone. It simply did not work. Individual incentive was stifled, and production'fell in consequence so severely that the experiment had to be abandoned in both countries. Obviously and logically, then, this present attempt to standardise the rates of remuneration of our own doctors would have precisely the same effect—individual incentive would be stifled and production would suffer a severe fall. Unfortunately for all of us, the production of our doctors is nothing more nor less than the health of New Zealand. Q.E.D.
