A GREATER WAR EFFORT
Sir,—Now that our Prime Minister has returned I assume we may look forward to a much greater war effort in this country. Now that the 40-hour week appears permanent, and there is no reason why it should not be, may I suggest that all non-essential industries be combed and their available labour forces be put on war work. Everywhere one sees people employed on work which is not necessary even in times of peace let alone now ß
Appeals are being constantly made for skilled workers for war work, especially in the engineering trade. In the face of this there are dozens of engineers. some of wide exjjerience, who are employed in maintenance work in industries which in this hour of our Empire's need are more than useless. Surely the Government will organise the country on an "all-in war" footing and give every available person—and by that I mean every person not on actual necessary productive work—a real job to do, thus effectively assisting old England with acts, not words. Anti Gas and Waste.
