STILL FEWER TOURISTS
EFFECTS OF THE WAR VISITORS FROM THE EAST (S.R.) WELLINGTON, Friday A further decrease in the number of overseas visitors to New Zealand caused by the war is recorded in the annual report of the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts and Publicity which was presented in the House of Representatives to-day. The report states that overseas visitors for the year ended March 31 last totalled only 3800 against 6891 the year before and the record number of 21,762 in 1938-39. "One result of the war has been to turn the attention of residents of India, China and the Malay States to the fact that this Dominion offers at-» tractive possibilities for those going on furlough and who are at present debarred from making the usual trip to Britain," the report continues. There were during the year 451 visitors from tin? Straits Settlements, 77 from Hongkong and 322 from Fiji. New Zealanders by visiting tourist resorts in increasing numbers helped to offset the decrease in overseas visitors.
