WAIPU DAIRY FACTORY

Sir, —Forty vears ago our fathers built up the Waipu butter manufacturing company, and have watched it grow from a 20-ton to a 710-ton output. Nine weeks ago fire destroyed the premises, and information to rebuild or amalgamate with Maungaturoto and Wiiangarei was asked for by the shareholders. A petition to rebuild was signed by a 95 per cent majority, proving bevond a doubt that Waipu wants to lteep that which it has had for 40 years—a butter factory. The Government is trying to force us to amalgamate in spite of the following advantages:—A coal mine in the district: adequate water supply; facilities to land supplies here, and our manufactured article in Auckland, at less costs than other factories; the best transport system north of Auckland for cream collection; a 17 per cent increase over last year's output; the voice of a 95 per cent majority to rebuild. Now the following disadvantages 0! amalgamation: Cream transported from 10 to 20 miles through the gorge to Maungaturoto and 20 miles to Wiiangarei. Cream deteriorates 1 per o«nt every mile after tho first five milas. What will Waipu lose in grade and test? Thousands of pounds spent in

machinery in other factories to manufacture our cream for export. Waipu wants to spend that in Waipu. Thousands of pounds spent unnecessarily in benzine, taking our cream unnecessarily 40 miles per day, averaging £ll6l for benzine alone per year. Just benzine, and the Government issues coupons for economy! No factory would be a calamitous loss to Waipu. Farmer's Daughter.
