TAKAPUNA COUNCIL

MEMBERS LEAVE MEETING

STATEMENT BY MAYOR

Concerning a report of a special meeting of the Takapuua Borough Council on Wednesday night. which lapsed after five members left the council room, the Mayor ol Takapuna, Mr. J. Gunmen, writes: ''The statement is absolutely misleading and incorrect. The town clerk submitted the draft estimates and pointed out that he could not balance the various items without an increase of one halfpenny in the pound as regards the rates tor the current year. Immediately after, Messrs. White, Holyoake, Carr and AleFarlaue criticised my policy in the past ot keeping rates low. and said it had been detrimental to the progress of the borough. They suggested that 1 should call a meeting of the ratepayers and advocate a further increase in rates.

"This 1 refused to do, and flfbeu, after listening to a torrent of invective for some hours, I told Mr. McFarlane where to get off, the Opposition party left the room. The members ot the council in favour of keeping rates at a minimum remained, but unfortunately, as one member was absent, the estimates could not be finalised."
