POST OF DEPUTY MAYOR
CLAIMS OF MISS MELVILLE
PROTESTS ro THE COUNCIL Protests against the non-appointment of Miss E. Melville, senior member of the City Council, to the post of deputy-, mayor were received by the council last night. The New Zealand Housewives' Association forwarded a unanimous resolution asserting that just recognition had been denied to Miss Mriville account of her sex The same opinion was expressed by the Kohimnrania-Mis-sion Bay Progressive lvague and the New Women's Club
On the motion of the Mayor. Mr. JA, C. Allum, the first two communications were received. When the Mayor moved similarly iti regard to the third, Miss Melville said that, in view of the 1 interest taken in the matter, •die would like to ask Mr. A. St. (lair Brown whether he would repeat the remarks he had made at an earlier inlornial meeting.
