OVERTIME AND COSTS
Sir, —"Fixed Income" asserts that farmers denounce the practice of additional wages being paid for additional work. No. What farmers and others may have denounced have been glaring instances of exorbitant rates of pay for overtime to a favoured coterie of workers. And, speaking of overtime, let us not forget that shorter hours are worked in this country than in any other country, r belligerent or neutral. On being asked if his fall hurt him much an Irishman replied, "No, it was the sudden stop at the end of it." The result is what matters, and what farmers object to is not additional wages for additional work, but further increased costs —still dearer commodities —the result of increased wages for less work. Less Work.
