NEW ZEALAND'S APATHY

Sir, —May 1 refer to Mr. Fraser's speech to New Zealand last Sunday evening. When our Empire is in such dire need, it seems to be a dreadful thing that men who have already served their country should be asked to do so again, while thousands of young follows are walking our streets, or holding down decent positions, and making no effort whatever to enlist for overseas service. Mr. Fraser seems to feel that the time for action i.s when the enemy sails up the Waitemata Harbour or drops parachutists in Queen Street Then, quite possihlv, he will meet them with a band playing "God Defend New Zealand" —but, then, too late. We arc far too apathetic, and it is time we, as a nation, took a drastic stand and answered the Empire's call to arms. A Last War's Sufferer.
