COMPULSION
Sir, —It wa.s a little amusing to see in large letters across the front page of a recent issue of the journal of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants the headline: '"No Conscription Under Labour Rule," and on turning the page to find more captions: "Compulsory Unionism. Application of Principle to Railway Service." The two articles were merely reproductions of documents which had appeared in substance in the daily press, but they looked rather odd when placed side by side. Of course, it will be said that there is no comparison between the two eases, but there seems to me to be at least this similarity, that, whereas our Labour Government deems it just to compel workers to join an organisation for protecting the interests of their occupational group, at some monetary sacrifice. it objects to compelling physically (it citizens to join an organisation —the Army—for protecting the very existence of the nation and the lives of its people. Fll TV-Firry.
