PETER SMITH SHINES STAR PRONTO PACES NICELY USEFUL EFFORT BY SIR FRANK BY • ABAYDOS ; .Conditions were ideal for traijiing at Epsom yesterday, - when the grass and dirt tracks were in good order. On the course proper-, with the poles out 50ft., several .smart- sprints, were recorded,, honours going to. Peter Smith and Star Pronto, who ran four furlongs in 1.7. Sir Frank also pleased by registering 1.7 2-5. Equipoise was responsible for a sound two miles, and Three Bells impressed at a mile and a-half.

Northern Smilo (E. P. Smith), Sir Frank (J. McKendrick) and Peter Smith (E. R. Smith) left tlio mile' and a-half at intervals of a second. Sir Frank finishing a head in. front of Peter Smith after running 3.42 <l-5. The paeo was on only in the last fivo furlongs, arid Peter Smith, who is likely to start in the Otahuliu Handicap, was running on well., Northern Smile drew attention to her prospects in maiden events' by going 3.44 4-5. . , Star Pronto (B. Dyer), after going steadily over tlio first mile in 2.32, completed a mile and a-half in 3.30. Star Pronto derived benefit from his racing at the summer meeting and is showing signs of regaining form. Forest Jewel Impresses

Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) began in front of Bedford (M. Smith) , and led' him over a mile and a-half in 3.3G, the last mile and a-quartcr in 2.57. Forest Jowel is in splendid order. Bedford was going well at the turn, but. broke. . Gold Kip (C. M. Morrison) conceded Dick Redmond (A. Paton) four seconds, and finished on terms at the end of a mile and a-half in 3.51. trotting the last half-mile very solidly in 1.12. Gold Kip has trained on the right way since running two thirds at Cambridge. Star Guide (J. J. Kcnnerley) finished in firm style lo heat Bronze King (D. Cook) over a mile and a-quarter in 3.5. running the last half-mile in l.'iu. Star Guide lias made good progress lately. Neon Oro (E. N. Kcnnerley), who was behind at the start, broke a hopple carrier and was eased up. Magic Task (C. M. Morrison) led Princess Linnctt (J. McKendrick) for six furlomrs. but they wore together at the end of a milo and a-quarter in 3.4. Scottish Jewel (E. N. iKenncrlc.v) accompanied them on the last six furlongs, giving a neat display for a youngster and covering the last half-mile in X.J I 3-5. Great Chum (S. M. August), assisted by Silk Lady (L. Beasley) over the last miio and a-half, worked two miles in 4.59. After going tlio first mile and a-quartcr in 3.5, ono half-mile in 1.10, Great Chum loafed and took 1.15 for the last half. Silk Lady, who looks very bright, was not bustled to record 3.59.

Stalky (S. M. August), who made several breaks, took G.7 1 to com plote two miles, tho last half-milo in 1.15, which he repeated in trotting an extra half-mile.

Sprint by Cavalryman Cavalryman (I. R. Morrison) attempted to concede Modern Lady (T. Roe), Gipsy Light (J. McKendrick) and John's Last (M. Smith) five seconds over a mile nnd a-quartcr. but, although he made tho good; time Of 2.55, failed to reach John's Last, who went 2.59. Cavalryman, after being well back commencing jho last half-mile, closed up with u brilliant two furlongs in 325, but weakened at the finish. John's Last finished full of running and is regaining form. Modern Lady broke early and was always in the rear. Sequoia (W. K. Summons), after a slow beginning, ran a mile and a-qiuarter un« hoppled in 3.10, the last half-mile in. 1.10. Matawah (W. S. McDonald) trotted a inile and a-half-steadily. Handicapper (G. H. Stubbs) broke near the finish of a inile and a-quarter with Auto Lad (W. Fleming), who paced in good style to win comfortably in 3.0 2-5, after covering the last half-mile-in 1.12.

Nawton Parrish (A. McGarry) was responsible for a good mile and a-lialf in 3.34, covering the last hnlf-miio in 1.8. He has improved -since racing, at the summer -mcetinK and finished solidly. Making his first appearance at Epsom for some considerable- time. Mountain Emblem CM. SJnith) displayed promise in working a mile, and n-quartcr in 3.3, the last halfmile in 1.10. He did not appear to bo getting the full benefit of his hopples and may do better with another run. Equipoise Goes Well Equipoise (S. JiL August), after going the first mile arid a-lialf in 3-34, completed two miles in 4.44. He worked in resolute style, the second half-mile in 1.8 being his best. Vanora (J. Mahoney) was going better than Winning Post (L. J. Mahoney) at the end of a mile and a-quarter in 3.0, running the final half-mile comfortably in 1.10. • Gay Moko (J. Mahoney) was not extended at any stage of two miles with Port Chalmers (I. Roe), her best being one half-mile in 1.14. Gay Moko is in splendid condition. Clay Pot (J. Paton) scored an easy victory over Charon (S. M. August) and Bournemouth (E. N. Kenherley). who broke repeatedly, over a mile and a-quarter in 3.2. Clay Pot is in great heart and should have a cnance of breaking her run of seconds in the second division of "the Waiheke Handicap next Wednesday. After conceding Young Parry (E. N. Krnnerley) and Kewpio's Bingen (H. McNaughton) two seconds. Lady Vasclyne (J. J. Kennerley) was alongside them at the end of a mile and a-quarter. which she ran in 3.4, the last half-mile comfortably in 1.11. Lady Vasclyne has furnished into a Solid mare and is in capital order.

After running the first half-mile in 2.22, Three Bells (E. N. Kennerley) was not doing his best to complete a mile and a-half In 3.31. It will not be for lack of condition if ho fails to race prominently at the coming meeting. On the dirt, Moana Tama (D. Cook) shaded Shrewdy (J. J. Kennerley) and Repose (E. N. Kennerley) over a mile and a-quarter in 2.55, after running the first six furlongs in 1.46. Renose,. who failed at the summer meeting, finished well against her more advanced companions. Isabella. Pointer (W. S. McDonald) was not extended while working : a mile and a-half in 0.34, the last half-mile in 1.10. Moko Direct (A. Paton) ran a mile and a-half in 3.30. Isabel Derby (J7 J. Kennerloy) and Munga Tangi (L. Laver), both of whom are well seasoned, worked freelegtred. , r ' The final trials on the grass will take place to-morrow from 5.30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

DERBY CANDIDATE CRUCIBLE AT TE RAPA Tho throo-year-old filly .Crucible, by Jack Potts from Anteiflpo, who ran third in the Victoria Handicap at Hutt Park last Saturday for her owner-trainer J-. D. Smith, and is engaged in tho Great Northorn Trotting Derby at Epsom on Saturday, has been leasod by a patron of M. Stewart's stable. Sho was brought to Tc Rapa after the Wellington 'meetiup: with members of Stewart's team, who competed at the southern meeting. Cracible was bred by Smith, who raced Antelope, a mare by Great Aildubon from Penelope, by Rothschild from Georgina. Penelope won races 25 years ago in tho ownership of Smith, being driven in some of her successes by the late E. C. McDormott. ' •
