ROTORUA CLUB

EVENTS ON SATURDAY FIFTEEN HORSES IN CUP DISCUSSION OF PROSPECTS CORNISH WELL FANCIED BY ARCHER Good acceptances have been received for the first day of the Rotorua .Pacing Club's Annual Meeting, .to 'be held at Arawa Park on Saturday and Monday, and fine weather is all that should be required to ensure a successful gathering. The remodelled course will be used for the first time and the track should be a great improvement on the old one. The betting will ,be under the win-and-place system.,

Principal interest will bo centred in tlio Rotorua Cup, which has drawn a good field of 15. Three of the candidates, King Rey, To Hai and Greek Queon, aro trained by R. H. Martin, of Matamata, who thus holds a strong hand. Kinjr Rey and Greek Queen aro owned by Mr. N. Grains and will, therefore, be bracketed. King Roy ran third in tho Matamata Cup last Saturday and should again run prominently, as lie has the same weight, 9.0, and is very fit. Greek Queen is an improving three-year-old filly, who has performed very creditably up to nine furlongs in tho hack class and tho extra distance may not be beyond her. To Hai was fourth in tho Matamata Cup and, as ho comes down from 8.7 to 7.12 and will meet King Roy on 01b. bolter terms, he has to be respected. Improving Three-year-old The elect of Martin's stable is sure to havo many admirers, but the actual favourite may be the improving three-year-old Cornish, who is doing better with each race, and appears to have a good way to go before reaching the peak of his form. Up to tho present ho has had only seven races and tho manner in which ho has won his way from maiden to open company has been impressive. At his Inst start Cornish easily beat a useful field over soven furlongs in the open class at Ellorsiie and he is handily placed with 7.4. Moreover, ho is bred on tho right lines to shine over middle distances, being a member of the same family as Bobrikoff, Estland, Finmark and other good horses, and he will disappoint if ho fails lo make a forward showing. In spite of the fact that sho has failed in her last four starts, tho southerner. Lady Montana, should not bo out of it with 8.7. She ran prominently for a mllo and a-quartor in tho Wellington Centennial Cup -and with 7.10 was fourth in tho Summer Handicap, one mile and threo furlongs, won by Beau Vite, on the final day. at Trontham. ■ Jack Tar has 31b. moro with 5.4 than ho carried into second in the Matamata Cup last Saturday, but he should again run well, as he is just returning to form after a spell. Namara. who won on the second day at Thames, lias failed since at Ellerslio, but was by no means disgraced and is a distinct possibility with 8.0, although a slightly shorter distanco probably would be in his favour. Chance for The Cardinal The form of Tho Cardinal since he won tho Avondale Cup has been disappointing, notwithstanding his fourth in the Auckland Cup. and the fact that lie is a slow, beginner will not be in his favour. Howover, he is nicely placed with 7.0, and a repetition of his best would make him very dangerous. Brazilian has nover been better than at present and, after his jrood form anions: the sprinters at Ellerslio last month, ho should command a following, especially as he has been t'reo lately from tho bleeding trouble that affected his form earlier. Kena has failed in his last few starts and may not appeal greatly unless the ground is soft. Saci'ono is a. light-weight possibility in spite of recent defeats. However, his inability to secure a good position early in his races will not be to his advantage. Still, he is likely to bo running on when many of the others are tiring. Scotland has reached the veteran stage and js not nearly as good as of yore, although he might be capable of another success whero tho class is not strong and the ground is easy. He is by no means a forlorn hope. Eastern Heir is a recent winner over hurdles and is not without a chance. The other light-weight, Raceline, does not appeal, as he will have to show much improvement upon his running at Matamata to turn the tables on the horses who beat him there. It should be a good betting race and the main fancies may Include Cornish, Jack Tar, Greek Queen and Brazilian. Useful Field in Sprint Somo useful sprinters aro engaged in the Tourist Handicap. Farland represents better class than, most of. the others and might not find 9.7 prohibitive. However, there are others lower down who .may appeal moro.' Sunola appears nicely placed, in spite of recent defeats, and should take beating. Lornacre may do better than at -Matamata, where tho soft going was not entirely to his liking, and Corato would only require to strike form to make his presence felt with 8.0. On his day Corato is very smart and this may be a good opportunity for him to make a return to the winning list, from which he has been missing this season. Tosh showed a. glimpse of form at Thames last month and his turn is due.

A creditable effort may bo forthcoming from Trilliarch. who has been doing belter lately' than he was earlier in the season. The speedy Valimcen has been unplaced, in tier four starts this season, but she lias only to strike form to be an early winner. She is now in n nice position in the weights and has been working pleasingly. Gainos and Anion are capable of good efforts and Aero King seems to be regaining his dash, so that lie is worthy of consideration. Penzance should go'-woll under a light-weight and she appeals more than either Noitaro or Gappy. Horses who may find favour arc Sunola, Corato, Valimeen and Penzanco.
