CRICKET NOTES

PLUNKBT SHIELD GAME WELLINGTON AND OTAGO I MATCH SfARTS : ON FRIDAY There are, no greatsurprises in' the Wellington Plunket Shield team; to play Otago at, Carisbrobk, commencing on Friday. The sole selector, Mr. W. J. R. Christophcrsen, was guided solely by form' in choosing : the ■Wellington College Old Boys' colt G.' L. Whyte to occupy the position of slow bowler in ;the eleven, say's a Wellington writer. Whyte is a trier all the' way, and although he may bo punished; in ,his; first iiiberprovicial match, he certainly will not bo worried by the fact. One of the features of his-bowling is his consistent length, even when the batsmen are on top. He has taken a crop of wickets in club games thin season. As a batsman he is quite, unheralded, but he frequently' runs up a useful score in his club team's tail. A right-hand bowler, favouring the leg break, and a left-hand batsman, he has thoroughly deserved his chance. 11. F. Rice, ike young Kilbirnie cuptain, makes a reappearance in the eleven. Until recently he liad a lean time, but with two excellent innings against Hutt (he scored a century in one innings) and his steadiness as a bowler, it was clear that-he .must again be given serious consideration, lie played in two Shield games last year and showed, some form as an opening bat with Tindill,, , J. R. Lamason and J. A. Ongley, two former Now Zeuland representatives, have been dropped for the Otago game; Ongley certainly has done nothing of noto lately to warrant consideration, but Lamason's 102 recently must have caused the selector to ponder before deleting his name, Still, generally speaking, Lamason has not been consistent this year. He bowled Quite well against Auckland and Canterbury, but he showed indifferent form with the bat. The teams for Friday's match aro as follows :

Wellington.—E. G. McLeod (captain), E. W. Tindill, W. Hepburn, T. L. Pritchard, J. A. Ongloy, W. G. IRainbird, W. F. Airey, H. F. Rico, O. Wrigley, G. L. Whyte, J. Ashenden, V. H. du Chateau. The twelfth man will probably not bo decided until the day of the match. Otago.—D. A. R. Moloney (captain), T. C. Fraser, G. J. Robertson, C. J. Elmes, G. Lemin, G. Mills, V. J..Leader, iA. H. Cutler, H. It. Cameron. C. D. Toomey. T. Chettleburgll. Twelfth man: A. C. Holdon.

ALTERATION TO BY-LAW ABANDONMENT OF PLAY The recent abandonment of a first-grade match was the subject of an amendment to the by-laws at last night's meeting of, the Auckland ' Cricket Association; By-law 17, which .provides .for adverse weather condi-tions,-only covers'"the postponement' of the commencement of play, and does not deal with any interference after play has commenced. It was generally felt that in the interests of the spectators the by-law'should bo rectified,. and it. was agreed to add the following amendment:— "In no ca&e shall a first grade match be abandoned after the commencement of play on account of adverse weather or other conditions, without. the consent of members of (he management committee present on the ground. If only one such* member be present, then such member shall- decide. If no member is present, then the decision shall be made by the umpires appointed by the committee to the match."The chairman, Mr. W: 'R. Fee; and Mr. N. C. :Snedden reported .that the Eden Park Board- of Control had. agreed to alter ~the boundary on 'No. '1 : wicket, and that "the work would be put jn ' hand immediately' to extend it a minimum of "15ft. This report met with the approval of the delegates. ' A comprehensive report on- the recent visit to Taranaki by an' Auckland side was received .from the -player-manager, Mr. P. E. Whitclaw. It was agreed to thank the Taranaki association for the hospitality shown".
