The 'outside of the course proper, with the trestles out about .'loft,, was available for fast work. The going was dead. Pleasing efforts were recorded by Veldette, Fiamborge, Mahaina,. Ramleh, Val Pere and Split Second. . Air Flight (Macdonnld) was not out to mako' time while covering Ave furlongs in 3.30. Trainer R. Brougiiton stated this morning that she Is not a certain starter on Thursday, Notium (Cole) shaded Chief Lord (Ryan) over five furlongs in 1.6. Notium appears none the worse for his racing at Wanganui. Chiof Lord is not a good track galloper. Gold Grip (Grylls) strode over half a mile in sis. Veldette (Sexton), having her first' fast work since racing at Trentham, ■hit out nicely over fivo furlongs in 1.5 2-5. She ran a fine race to finish fourth in tho Douro Cup, and is assured of strong support in. tho Tokaora Hack Handicap on Thursday. Sprint by Finances Fiamborge (Vaughan) always held the measure of Gitana Lass (McDonald) throughout half a mile in 535. Fiancee (McDonald) sprinted three furlongs in 40s. Mischel (Holland) cleared oul from Barry Boy (Vaughan) over the concluding stages of half a mile in 51 4-ss. Unfortunately Barry Buy has heroine seriously affected with respiratory trouble and an operation seems inevitable. Prime Quality (Sexton) covered half a milo in 53 2-os. • Bidens (Ryan) got to tho end of three furlongs in 40s. The only visiting horses on tho tracks this morning wore Pearl of Asia, Alunga, Trench Law and Sieginnnd, who were let off with steady, paco work on the plough.

Mahaina (Holland) went very freely to defeat Kilometre (Sexton) by a couplo of lengths at the conclusion of fivo furlongs in 1.3 1-5. Although the distance of the Trial Hundicap on Thursduy may be a trifle short for Mahaina. she should be handy at tho finish. Kilometre is in good order. ' ' Ramleh and Val Pere Ramleh (George) and Viil Pere (Riley) did a working gallop ovor a milo, running the last fivo furlongs in 1.9 1-5, and two ill 255. Ramleh is an outside prospect, for tho Egmont Cup. Val Pere has improved since tho holidays, and should perform well at the meeting. Winsome Lu (Graham) and Race Away (Riley) ran half a mile-on the; trial grass in 535. Winsome Lu is backward, not having raced for a considerable time. Raceaway and Race Call are to, race in the South Island for a few weeks after tho Egmont meeting. ' •

Radio Call (Riley) dashed over thrco furlongs in 3!>s. He is a speedy tolt, but may requiro time, Race Call (Graham) trot to the end of five furlongs down the back in 3.6. He has been slightly affected in tho wind for ovor a year, and is becoming worse. Split Second (Grindlay) shaded Resingold (Cole) over half a milo in 54 l-ss. Split Second is endowed with more than averugo speed and shoutd not remain long in tno maiden class. Schooling of Jumpers Chiltern (Toki) gave a satisfactory exhibition when schooled over four hurdles. He is a fine stamp of four-year-old by Illumination and is rapidly gaining confidence. He claims relationship to the good cross-country performers Coalition and Passin' Thru'. Studejit Prince (Grindlay) gavo his usual safe display over five hurdles. With the softening of the tracks ho has been working in improved style. Disturbed (Toki) traversed two rounds over hurdles yesterday in pleasing fashion, jumping six fences in all. .' The three-year-old Myosotis gelding The Tryst has been leased to a patron of H. Scally's stable.

NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK ROLLICKER MOVES FREELY NED CUTTLE IN GOOD TRIM [from OUII own correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday The tracks at. New Plymouth wero in surprisingly good order after rain, for .work this morning, when most of the horses with engagements at Hawera on Thursday wero given their final trials. Good efforts were registered by Rollicker, Ned Cuttle, Ripple, Lady Jim and Leighon Rei. The galloping took place on the course proper, with the flags out about 30ft. Lady Jim hit out freely over six furlongs in 1.23. She finished full of running. Lady Jim is not engaged on the first day at Hawera, but will race on the second. Leighon Rei shaped well over half a mile in 525, infusing plenty of dash into her work. •Kernel Mint ran the last two furlongs of a round in 20 2-os. Lu Chang took 41s for three furlongs. Windsor Glow ran about a bit while covering half a mile in 50 2-ss. He is a well-grown three-year-old by Illumination, but is srreen. Tahurangi wont a mile and a-quarter in 2.18 1-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.34. It was a sound effort. Ned Cuttle was going comfortably alongside of Ripple at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5, running the last halfmile in 54 2-ss. Ned Cuttle worked well and Ripple also shaped creditably._ Boden Park moved smoothly over half a mile in 545.

Taitoru, 'making a food deal of noise, wont six furlongs, tho last five in I.S. Rollicker ran the last five of seven furlongs in 1.5. He hit out with plenty of freedom and finished strongly. After running the first two in 26s Miss Clipper completed five furlongs in 1.6 1-5. She has improved since joining P. Johnson's team. Aussie Ra, who has made good progress since resuming work, was restricted to an easy task. .Wave Length displayed dash to run three furlong in 395. On Monday Filhort. jumped three hurdles in good style. Life Guard has been sold to a South Island owner, hut will remain with H. Dulieu until after tho Opunake meeting.

CHRISTCHTJRCH, Tuesday Tho committee of tho Canterbury Jockey Club decided to-day to give a donation of £250 to the Chrisfchurch patriotic fund. It was also resolved that tho stakes for tho autumn meeting next month remain thesamo as last year. The brush hurdle races have been changed to events over open hurdles and tho distanco of the : Courtenay Handicap, a maiden event on the first day, has been increased from six to seven ■ furlongs. For the Great Autumn .Handicap a, proviso is added to the effect that the winner of the Sockburh: Handicap on the first day will not be rehandicapned. The distanco of the Addington Handicap has been increased from six to seven furlongs. Tho Canterbury District committee decided to-day to make A recommendation to tho New Zealand Racing Conference that tho Amberlcy Racing Club be granted permission to hold its annual race meeting at Riccarton on May 4, subject to tho approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs, tho Hon. W. E. Parry. It is the intention of L. J. Ellis to ride at the Wnikato Racing Club's meeting on February 17 and 10 and at tho Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting on February 24 and 26.
