ELLERSLIE WORK

SOME USEFUL EFFORTS CALULA BOY SPRINTS WELL SOUND ROUND BY BRIGHT IDEA BY BOBRIKOFF Sound efforts over a round bv Bright Idea and Spinning Wheel, and smart sprints by Calula Bny, British Talent, •Sebrof • and Smninary were features of tlie gallops nt Ellerslie yesterday. The ' vo - 2 grass track was available, and 1 the going was faster than it has been for some time. On the grass, Silver Quox (Gilchrist) was held back to Waitarma (Pell) over fivo furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Silver Quex has done exceptionally well since winning nt JSllerslie. The two-year-old Calula Boy (Gilchrist) showed a good burst of speed jn Retting to the end of threo furlongs in 30 2-ss, tlie best of the morning for the distance. The Autopay colt has hail a fairly easy time since he raced at Avondale and has furnished well. Master Warden (Qemmell) covered half a mile in 57 i-os. After running the first two in 255, British Talent' (Speck) pleased by reeling off five furlongs in 3.3- 2-5. Ovor the same ground, Francis Drake (Farrell) had the measure of Trevaco (McTavish) in -1.4, the first two furJongs being run in 2i> "l-ss. Considering ho carried a good weiglit, Trillinrch (Neil) did well to get to the end of half a mile in 49 4-ss. Royal Appellant (Gemmoll) strodo over a round, the last six furlongs taking 3.24 and half-mile 555. Ho continues to traiu on pleasingly. Valspear (Hcarn) hit out freely over a round, the last six furlongs being run in. 1.19 3-5 and half-mile in 52 3-ss. Valspear is expected to be in good order for Whangarei next week. Palmint Shades Hot Shot Palniint (Gilchrist) was doing slightly better than Hot Shot (McTavish) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 3.4 2-5, the first two being run in 20s. Hot Shot had the worse of the weights, and his effort was satisfactory considering he has not done a great deal of serious work since being recommissioned. Tea Gong (McGrath) ran tho last halfmile of his work easily in 57 2-ss. The Tea Tray gelding is bearing a much-improved appearance and he is being given every opportunity. Bright Idea (Kerr) was always in front of Miss Appellant (Wiggins) over a round in 3.15 3-5, tho last six furlongs occupying 3.30 and half-mile 53 2-ss. Bright Idea worked attractively and appeared to have something in reserve at the finish. Lady Acushla (Hearn) completed the last, half-mile of her work in 52 2-~>s without being extended. AVide out and under a good hold, Xightbeam (Wiggins) ran three fur-, longs in 11 2-">s. The Xignt Raid colt has dono well since his impressive win at Ellerslie and his next appearance will be on the second day at Avondale. Royal Son (Xeil) finished in front, of Bide-a-Wee (Kerr) over half a mile in 535. Spinning Wheel (Wiggins) covered a round in 1.45 2-5, tho last six furlongs in I.IS 3-5, and half-mile in 52 3-ss. She impressed by the ,resolute manner ia which she was running on "at the end and should be at tho top of her form for Whangarei. ... Glen Abb and Gay Broney There was little between Glen Abb (Markwick) and Gay Broney (McTavish) at tho conclusion of six furlongs in 1.17 1-5, the last half-mile taking 51 2-ss. Land Girl I (Simon), Royal Huntress (Green) and Ivy WilFonyx (Br'ucd) were companions over an easy round in 1.53 3-5. The last half-mile was run in 52 4-ss, with Land Girl doing best at the finish. Boy Lu (Wiggins) was not bustled to run threo furlongs in 30 l-ss. Pasture (Akerstein) moved freely over half a mile in 50 3-ss. She looks bright nfter her spell. Royal' Abb (McTavish) completed the last six of seven furlongs in 1.17 1-5. The disappointing Posterity gelding will race in future in the colours of his trainer, R. S. Bagby. After running tlie first furlong in 13 2-ss, Sebrof (McGrath) finished strongly to get to the end of five furlongs in 1.3 1-5; which was not bettered during the morning. Biddy Girl (Ryan) could have improved on her 3.30 1-5 for six furlongs, the last half-mile taking 525. The best half-mile went to tho credit of Summary (Gilchrist), who showed plenty of sneed in running 40s. White Mark (Hearn) strode over three furlongs in 40s. She has made marked improvement since entering J. Lambcss" stable, and gives every indication of fulfilling her early: promise. Mon Acre (McTavish)' was not extended to beat Tea Chat (Cameron) over a round in l.r>l. The pace was on over the last three furlongs, which were run in 38 1-oS.

Odtaa (Gilchrist) could have improved considerably on his 1.6 3-5 for five furlongs. Stonehaven (Hearn) and Digger Jim (Murray) were associated over three furlongs in 30 -t-.js. Over a similar distance, Night Pilot (Gilchrist) finished- resolutely to bent Maori Boy (Gemmell) in 375. Night Pilot, who will race in the same colours as Nightbeam, is a very likely-looking colt by Night Raid from Lytnp.

Schooling of Jumpers True Bill (Craddock) and Whenua (Fergus) were companions in a schooling bout over the pony hurdles, both being inclined to jump extravagantly. Beverley (Sinton) cleared two pony hurdles in good style. He afterwards ran six furlongs the grass in 3.'IS 'l-5, the last halfmile in 51s. Loyal Grant (Gemmell) cleared four pony hurdles carefully. Ringshot (Bevan) did not impress while jumping two hurdles, but he does better in company. Bisquit (Te Kata) gave a brilliant display over four hurdles. He afterwards strode over six furlongs in 1.21 -1-5, the last half-mile in 5-IR. Cintrace (Fergus) went over four pony hurdles, but he jumped very erratically. A candidate for Whangarei, Armacourt was displaying a doubtful leg this morning and she moved a -trine short while doing slow work. The . disappointing FJeetwind has finished her racing career and has been mated with the recently-imported sire Chatsworth. A recent addition to F. Davis' team is a two-year-old filly by Solicitor General from the Martian tnare Battle Torque. Sho is a solid type of youngster and is well forward, having received her early education at Woodville. The Ellerslie jockey L. Dulicu intends being present at the rtnngitikei Racing Club's meeting at Bulls on Saturday, when his i mounts will include The Smiler.
