METAL WORKERS' AWARD
EMPLOYMENT OF LABOURERS ARBITRATION COURT ORDER An order adding the Auckland District Labourers' and Related Trades Union as a party to the metal-workers' assistants' award has been issued by the Court of Arbitration. The application, which was made by the Fletcher Construction Company, Limited, was opposed by the Metal-Workers' Assistants' Union. ' In a memorandum the president of the Court. Mr. Justice o'Regan, says the object in view is to enable any employer of general labourers to utilise their services in doing work ordinarily done by metal-workers' assistants where it is merely incidental or ancillary' to the principal employment. "In other words, the Court desires to regularise what is already done in practice by freeing employers from liability for breach of award." said His Honor. "While freeing employers from the inconvenience of engaging metalworkers' assistants lor such incidental work, however, we desire to make it clear that any departure from prevailing practice is not contemplated. We. regard the situation as eminently one for reasonable compromise by and between the parties concerned."
