PORT OF WHANGAREI
TUTUKAKA HARBOUR LIGHT [ry telegraph —own correspondent] WFIAXGARF.I. Thursday During the month of September 72 vessels entered ami cleared the port of Whangarci. Exports totalled ,12,534 tons, of which 11.704 was cement. Of the 4135 tons of imports 1415 tons was coal, mainly for the Railway Department. '
Reporting to the board, the engineer, Mr. W. M. Eraser, stated that he had taken observations from the position of the light that it is proposed to erect at the entrance to Tutukaka harbour. Representations had been made by coastal shipping interests that a red sector covering the dangerous Elizabeth Reef be included in the light. Mr. Eraser said the light could not be seen from the Elizabeth Reef, as a high pinnacle of land cut off the view. Under these conditions once a boat lost the Cape Brett light and had not picked up the Tutukaka light it would immediately be known that the craft was too close to shore. The report is to be forwarded to the Marine Department. It was on the Elizabeth Reef that the Auckland—trawler St. Vincent was holed about two weeks ago.
