ANGRY RETORT

DOMINION FINANCES

Mr; savage and critic

PAST BORROWING QUOTED

. [BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL" REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday,

"Mr. Goodfellow's statement is beneath contempt," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, to-day, when referring to a published interview in which Mr. W. Goodfellow, oil his return from abroad, said that New Zealand the 'world over had lost her excellent financial reputation. "He seems to have joined up with that almost extinct race of political gasbags who are never happy unless they are decrying their own country at homo and abroad," Mr. Savage said". "Now Zealand will win through in spite of what Mr. Goodfellow or his political, friends may say. "Mr. Goodfellow refers to our future financial engagements and thinks we need expert financial guidance to get us back to where we were. It seems to ni'e that this so-called financial guidance landed us where we are, with about £100,000,000 of loan money falling due during the next 10 years, and for the' borrowing of which, the present Government is in no way responsible. We inherited it from Mr. Goodfellow's political friends and do not want any financial experts to tell us what it means. "As to getting financial guidance to show us liovv to get back to where we were when this Government took office, I, sincerely trust the neoplc of this country will .see to it that nothing of the sort happens, and that, whatever guidance is necessary, it will be directed toward higher and nobler things. "The present state of affairs," Mr. Savage concluded, "can best be judged by comparing the living conditions of the people with what they were during the , period Mr. Goodfellow seems so proud of."
